{"id":753,"date":"2016-07-29T13:50:05","date_gmt":"2016-07-29T12:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=753"},"modified":"2016-07-29T13:50:05","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T12:50:05","slug":"gin-quizzes-and-counoise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=753","title":{"rendered":"Gin, Quizzes and Counoise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fellow Wine Lovers,<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally, we have days where we are less busy.<\/p>\n<p>Commonly referred to as late July, August and January, these are the days when we try and get stuff organised for the days when we are run off our feet.\u00a0 Within this less busy category of days, we have a small subset known as <em>\u2018days when we really, really aren\u2019t very busy at all\u2019<\/em>, which often tend to be Tuesdays.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to clarify here that not being very busy isn\u2019t a reference to sales but more a reference to what we do between customer visits.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t any upcoming tastings to organise, all of our suppliers are stuck in traffic jams outside Dover so there are no wines to be tasted and our VAT paperwork is all up to date.<\/p>\n<p>This Tuesday was one of those days.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d read the news, we\u2019d read the wine news, Alex had had a haircut, Wayne had updated his Strava and still it was nearer the start of the day than the busier finish.\u00a0 We\u2019d researched once more the Clinton \/Trump conundrum and decided that Hillary just edges it, providing there isn\u2019t a sustained terrorist attack on the US before November in which case Donald being in power will probably be the least of our problems.\u00a0 We\u2019d argued about drug cheating in relation to Russian attendance at the Olympics and discovered that, somewhat to our surprise, that we had unusually different points of view.\u00a0 We moved swiftly on from that debate.\u00a0 We read about Hepple Gin in the press again (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/food-and-drink\/gin-cocktails-hepple-gin-english-favourites-a7150871.html\">http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/food-and-drink\/gin-cocktails-hepple-gin-english-favourites-a7150871.html<\/a> ) and thus fixed a date to go to The Goring for cocktails \u2013 in about 10 days time, if you fancy joining us?<\/p>\n<p>By now we were looking for new avenues of entertainment and discovered the Wine Quiz on the Decanter website.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve not had a go, they are great distraction for five minutes, or an hour and five minutes depending on your workload!<\/p>\n<p>If you fancy beating our scores, I can tell you we got 80% on <em>ABC, South of France<\/em> and <em>Pinot Noir<\/em>, 90% on <em>Italy, Ros\u00e9<\/em> and <em>Syrah\/Shiraz,<\/em> and a rather startling 100% on <em>Sauvignon Blanc.\u00a0 <\/em>Let us know how you get on \u2013 there are lots more quizzes on there and there are a lot more Tuesdays!<\/p>\n<p><u>Summer Saturdays<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Please note that throughout the month of August our Saturday hours will be 10am-7pm.<\/p>\n<p><u>Tasting this weekend<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Stung by the fact that we seem to know more about Sauvignon Blanc than Syrah, we have chosen our wines carefully this week.<\/p>\n<p>On the white table we have <strong>Willi Haag Braunberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett 2013 &#8211; \u00a316.79 <\/strong>which we can guarantee comes from the Mosel, is made from Riesling and is a deliciously palate pleasing 8.5% alcohol.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know anything more about it because, well, you know, it\u2019s not Sauvignon.<\/p>\n<p>For the red, we have <strong>Ch\u00e2teau de Montfaucon 2013 &#8211; \u00a313.99<\/strong> which, the label assures us is Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise \u2013 I wonder what percentage we\u2019d get in a quiz about Counoise \u2013 and hails from the Rhone valley.\u00a0 Someone once likened it to a baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape even \u2013 it was Wayne, I believe.<\/p>\n<p>So, without a Sauvignon in sight, I wish you fair passage and hope to see you for a quick tasting later on or tomorrow&#8230;.
