{"id":720,"date":"2016-04-22T13:47:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T12:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=720"},"modified":"2016-04-22T13:47:21","modified_gmt":"2016-04-22T12:47:21","slug":"always-remember-its-a-marathon-not-a-sprint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=720","title":{"rendered":"Always remember, it\u2019s a Marathon not a sprint."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fellow Wine Lovers,<\/p>\n<p>Always remember, it\u2019s a Marathon not a sprint.<\/p>\n<p>The Queen hit 90 yesterday.\u00a0 That, my friends, is a marathon.\u00a0 She\u2019s been in charge for 64 years and doesn\u2019t particularly look like hanging up her white gloves yet.\u00a0 She hasn\u2019t let anything upset her rhythm \u2013 World War II, marriage to Prince Philip, four children, Mop Tops, flares and Cliff Richard \u2013 all were left in her wake as she trotted on resolutely.\u00a0 Everywhere she goes, people shout her name and wave; and she graciously waves back, whilst maintaining a constant forward motion \u2013 impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s a Marathon, not a sprint.<\/p>\n<p>400 years is a marathon.\u00a0 Tomorrow will be the 400<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the death of a chap called William Shakespeare.\u00a0 You may have come across some of his works but if you haven\u2019t, you should.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure how many other 17<sup>th<\/sup> century authors you are currently enjoying, certainly my list is quite short, but big Bill has been consistently top of the list.\u00a0 Whilst he wasn\u2019t greatly praised in his lifetime, his works have adopted the long game and are showing no signs of diminishing popularity.\u00a0 That\u2019s impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s a Marathon, not a sprint.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you, 400 years is nothing if your name is St George.\u00a0 1,713 years ago our Patron Saint shuffled off this mortal coil (thanks for the quote, Mr S.) and yet we still celebrate him to this day.\u00a0 He\u2019s a dragon killer, he\u2019s the design of our national flag, he\u2019s the protector of the royal family and has been for a good few centuries now and we don\u2019t see that changing.\u00a0 Raise a glass to our impressive Saint.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s a Marathon not a sprint.<\/p>\n<p>When you jog down from Blackheath and are feeling super relaxed on Sunday morning and everybody is shouting <em>\u2018Go on Kelly, you can do it, only 24 miles to go\u2019<\/em> remember to smile and wave (like the Queen) and trot on resolutely, remembering the training, remembering the examples set by Betty, Bill and Georgy-boy, remember it\u2019s a marathon.\u00a0 When you coast through the wall of noise that is Canary Wharf and people shout <em>\u2018Come on Laura, you\u2019re nearly there\u2019<\/em>, look back at them and smile and wave, safe in the knowledge that you\u2019re nowhere near <em>\u2018nearly there\u2019<\/em> at all, but thankful for the support.\u00a0 If our Queen can still rule the country, if our Bard can still be a bestseller and if our Saint can still inspire a feast, then you can certainly run 26.2 miles.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s a Marathon not a sprint.<\/p>\n<p>This should be the warning to our Wine &amp; Cheese tasting attendees \u2013 last night we held another successful evening of processed grape and processed milk appreciation.\u00a0 However, when 10 people are confronted with just short of 3.5 kilos of cheese there is only going to be one winner&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The next Cheese &amp; Wine evening is Thursday 26<sup>th<\/sup> May at 8pm.\u00a0 There are half a dozen places left and \u00a320 will save your chair at the table with a few chunks of cheese!<\/p>\n<p><u>Elsewhere<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Sadness, once again.\u00a0 As we remove our headgear for AFKAP at 57 and Victoria Wood at 62 we wonder if it\u2019s just us getting older and thus our heroes aging accordingly, or has this just been a really, really bad year for showbiz?<\/p>\n<p><u>Here<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Unintentionally, this week\u2019s email has become somewhat focused on death and mortality.\u00a0 However, we are great believers in celebrating life and it is with these thoughts in mind that we have decided on which wines to taste this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>For the white, we have upped the ante a bit this week and added bubbles.\u00a0 <strong>Herbert Hall NV Brut (\u00a328.99)<\/strong> is a cracking English Sparkler from Marden in Kent. \u00a0A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, that Matthew Jukes described as <em>&#8220;the finest debut English Sparkling Wine I have ever tasted&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And for the red it was impossible to look past one of our best-selling wines from the Rhone.\u00a0 <strong>Les Vignes du Prince 2014 (\u00a39.99).\u00a0 <\/strong>When we tasted this wine we thought \u2018an inexpensive Rh\u00f4ne red from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards, what\u2019s not to like?\u2019 \u00a0Made by Celliers du Prince, a co-op founded in 1924 and still the only one in the Chateauneuf area, this wine is soft and juicy in your glass with plenty of brambly fruits. \u00a0Syrah brings just a touch of pepper to the soft berry palate, making it the ideal partner to bangers and mash.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck to anyone running on Sunday, eat lots of pasta have a good night\u2019s sleep and remember it\u2019s not a Marathon, it\u2019s a Snickers&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fellow Wine Lovers, Always remember, it\u2019s a Marathon not a sprint.
