Fellow Wine Lovers,<\/span><\/p>\n Ok, so we wrote this on Thursday evening, before it wellied it down last night, but I think we\u2019ll still run with it\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n Sun\u2019s out, everyone\u2019s feeling a little bit fuzzy and relaxed… <\/span><\/p>\n Champagne Houses<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n We visited the pub on Wednesday night, as you do, for market research and to check the opening hours (all the way to the end) and as the night wore on, the conversation moved onto Champagne and its brands.\u00a0 The next morning, as a follow up, we rooted around t\u2019interweb to see if anything that we had told people last night was true.<\/span><\/p>\n And, for the most part, we had been truthful; we had just been too conservative with our figures.<\/span><\/p>\n The stats we uncovered are, I\u2019m sure, widely available but our primary source was The Drinks Business, so we have gone with their research, lazy boys that we are.<\/span><\/p>\n Based on 2012 volume, the two largest houses are:<\/span><\/p>\n Mo\u00ebt & Chandon \u2013 28,080,000 bottles<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n Veuve Clicquot \u2013 17,688,000 bottles<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n And in 10th<\/sup> position we have:<\/span><\/p>\n Perrier Jou\u00ebt \u2013 2, 953,596 bottles<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n So, the largest house produces almost 10 times as much fizz as the 10th<\/sup>.\u00a0 If we then consider that in 3rd<\/sup> position we have the largest cooperative, Nicolas Feuillatte, producing 9,099,996<\/b> bottles \u2013 a third of M&C production \u2013 the figures get a bit more scary.<\/span><\/p>\n So what does this really tell us?\u00a0 Firstly that, since Mo\u00ebt and Veuve are both owned by LVMH (that\u2019s Louis Vuitton Mo\u00ebt Hennessey FYI), then one company is responsible for producing an awful lot of bubbles.\u00a0 It might also make one think of words such as factory, conveyor belt, bulk<\/i>.\u00a0 It certainly doesn\u2019t elicit terms such as hand crafted, artisan, specialist, passion<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n Moutard \u2013 c560,000 bottles<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Chassenay d\u2019Arce \u2013 c1,000,000 bottles<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Both these stats are our own research (!) because neither house featured in the top ten and to be honest with you we\u2019re as pleased as punch that this is the case.<\/span><\/p>\n Hand crafted, artisan, specialist, passion<\/span><\/i> – lesson over.<\/span><\/p>\n Tall buildings<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Petronas Towers, The Shard, The Gherkin, The Leaning Tower of Pisa \u2013 all these are names used in reference to our rather magnificent stack of Ros\u00e9.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be hot all weekend, it\u2019s been a while coming, so let\u2019s all get tucked in.<\/span><\/p>\n Chateau de l\u2019Aumerade C\u00f4tes de offer you a tempting discount!<\/span><\/p>\n Windmills<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n It\u2019s Windmill Market time again, down at St Mark\u2019s Church Hall behind the library in Wimbledon, from 10 am until 2 pm on Saturday.\u00a0 It\u2019s a pound to get in, but we\u2019ve got flyers that will get you in for free\u00a0 should you so desire.\u00a0 Alex will be down there with his stall and banter, Norbiton Cheese should be there too, who we buy our cheese from for our tastings, and a host of other local favourites.<\/span><\/p>\n Stables<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Just a quick back pat for Wayne, who clearly has the connections down at the yard, as his tip for last week\u2019s Derby romped home \u2013 Park Vintners\u2019 very own John McCririck…<\/span><\/p>\n And to celebrate we\u2019ll open a pair of Percheron at the tasting table this weekend as we think they\u2019ll fit in nicely.\u00a0 They\u2019re both from the Western Cape in South Africa where they know a thing or
