Fellow Wine\nLovers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well I\u2019m back,\nhave I missed much?  This week we have\nbeen mostly watching horses run around a track down in the Cotswolds. Our\nfavourite race meet has been happening at Cheltenham and a slow rate of\nattrition has seen us gently enrich a couple of fine chaps in tweed jackets who\nseem awfully good with numbers. Years ago we had a customer who was a\nbookmaker, and he used to come into the Oddbins we worked at most Saturdays. If\nhe\u2019d had a good day he\u2019d buy a case of posh claret, if he\u2019d had a bad one he\u2019d\nbuy a bottle of vintage champagne. We\u2019ll leave the story there, wishing we had\nsuch a nice collection of posh claret!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whilst on the\nsubject of claret we\u2019ll just say thanks to the tasting group who were in for a\nBordeaux tasting last night. All applied themselves with commitment and now\nknow their left from right bank! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sport<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, Liverpool\nfinally showed they are not completely infallible by getting knocked out of the\nChampions League by Atletico Madrid. At least they can concentrate on the\nPremiership now, eh? Both Arsenal and Tottenham have also decided against any\nfurther travel to Europe by the same method, Arsenal having ended up in\nquarantine for their troubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve had a\nbudget this week, an impressive amount of measures for a man who has only been\nin the job for five minutes. It would appear that wine and petrol are no more\nexpensive, the NHS has had a cash injection and infrastructure projects are all\nback on board, unless you\u2019re Heathrow. Finally, there are a series of measures\naimed at helping small business\u2019 which may help to keep a few wolves from the\ndoor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Arrival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the wine\nfront we\u2019ve got a fantastic new Barbera in the Vigna Marina Coppi \u2018I Grop\u2019 Barbera Superioire 2013 (\u00a329.99). <\/strong>Marina\nCoppi is the daughter of legendary cyclist Fausto Coppi, who was the first man\nto win both the Giro d\u2019Italia and the Tour de France in the same year. Whilst the\nfamily has owned the vineyards since Fausto\u2019s time, it was only when her son\nFrancesco took over in 2003 the estate began bottling their own wines. This\nwine is a single vineyard wines from the \u2018I Grop\u2019 vineyard at 400m altitude in\nCastellania. When we tasted it we found it nicely rounded, the little bit of\nage adding a slightly savoury edge to the plum and vanilla notes and gently\nspiced long fresh finish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasting This Weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wearing the\nwhite shorts this weekend will be Aromo\nViognier 2018 (\u00a39.49)<\/strong> a smashing crisp white from the Maule Valley in\nChile. We\u2019ve been selling this on and off since we opened and its appeal has\nnot diminished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over in the\ncorner with the red t-shirt is a new one Villa\nMottura Negroamaro 2018 (\u00a312.99),<\/strong> it\u2019s a grape variety that Wayne has a bit\nof fondness for, from the heel of Italy. Lovely ripe dark fruits, a herby hint\nof tobacco – why not come and give it a try yourself, maybe we\u2019ll put your\ntasting note on the bottle instead of ours!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
