{"id":1152,"date":"2019-06-07T14:47:34","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T13:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1152"},"modified":"2019-06-07T14:47:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T13:47:34","slug":"our-best-tip-dont-take-sports-tips-off-wine-merchants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1152","title":{"rendered":"Our best tip \u2013 don\u2019t take sports tips off wine merchants\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fellow Wine\nLovers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, with\nthat end of term feeling in the air, with journalists all desperately punning H.E.Bates\nnovels and looking up all the different interpretations and definitions of the\nword May, we come to the end of Theresa Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By way of a\nsmall adieu, we thought we\u2019d round up some headlines and news items that have\npeppered her time as leader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says he\nagrees with those calling for Theresa May to quit over cuts in police numbers.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This first\nappeared on the BBC News on the 5<sup>th<\/sup> June 2017 and, we notice, this wasn\u2019t\nthe last time that JC called for her departure<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Theresa May\u2019s narrow election victory has\nresulted in swathes of politicians calling for her to resign.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As The Metro happily\nreminds us, on the 9<sup>th<\/sup> June 2017, Theresa hasn\u2019t always had the\nsupport of her team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Prime Minister is currently\nentertaining MPs at her Chequers country retreat, where she has allegedly told\nthem she will quit as Prime Minister on August 30, 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 27<sup>th<\/sup>\nAugust 2017, The Star, amongst other more prestigious titles (but they all had\npaywalls!), actually comes up with the most accurate prediction of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 9<sup>th<\/sup>\nNovember 2017, The Express spoke to Jessica Bridge, of Ladbrokes, who said: <em>May looks safe for now, despite her strong\nand stable government doing their best to prove otherwise, but savvy punters\nare struggling to envisage plain sailing for the PM until year end.&nbsp; Ladbrokes (then) said the chances of Mrs May\nbeing replaced in 2017 are 5\/1 but there are 7\/4 odds of it happening in 2018,\n15\/8 odds for 2019 and 4\/1 odds for 2020 or later.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving to the\n1<sup>st<\/sup> May 2018, The Mirror offers another resignation opportunity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The rattled PM faced growing calls to\nresign for dodging responsibility for the heartless policies that led to the\nwrongful deportation of Windrush family members.&nbsp; And with her \u201cshield\u201d Ms Rudd gone after she\nstepped down as Home Secretary for misleading parliament on targets, Mrs May\nwas left exposed to attack.&nbsp; But she\nrefused four times to say whether she would quit\u2026 <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\nNovember 2018, reading The Telegraph, we finally get back to the issue that\nwill finally sink her \u2013 Europe: <em>Theresa\nMay has refused to confirm whether she would resign if her Brexit deal is\nrejected by MPs, as she insisted that it was the &#8220;the best deal for the\nUK.&#8221;&nbsp; In an interview with BBC Radio\n5 Live, Mrs May was asked three times if she would stand down but refused to\nprovide an answer.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We now know\nwhere this chapter will end but do we know where the next chapter begins?&nbsp; As mentioned last week, we\nlost money on the Giro d\u2019Italia; we also lost money on the Champions League;\nideally Johanna Konta would have kept us in the Billecart-Salmon lifestyle\nwe\u2019re accustomed to but sadly not. &nbsp;Having\ndecided that most of the teams in the ICC World Cup are being offered too short,\nwe took the West Indies as a bit of an outside punt and certainly some excitement\nand of course an immediate loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our best tip\n\u2013 don\u2019t take sports tips off wine merchants\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps most\nexcitingly though, the FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup starts tonight and we have a very\nreal chance of making it deep into the latter stages of the competition.&nbsp; We\u2019ve backed England to win and with an\noutside punt on Australia \u2013 having looked at the bookies today, there is\nsomething strange about seeing football teams from Brazil at 25-1 and Argentina\nat a whopping 400-1!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything\nelse?&nbsp; Oh yes, it\u2019s only WORLD GIN DAY\nagain tomorrow (Saturday).&nbsp; Not as\ncomplicated as it sounds, by all accounts, and one of our number certainly considers\nit to be Gin day everyday but has still taken tomorrow off just to be sure he\ndoesn\u2019t miss anything\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suffice to\nsay we\u2019ll have our tasting Gins open, and ready for sampling \u2013 a reminder of\nour selection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Elderwood\nEnglish Gin &#8211; \u00a314.99<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same\nProvence ros\u00e9 that we\u2019ve had for not sure how many years now and every bit as\ntasty.&nbsp; A lovely pale salmon colour, with\ndelicate red berry fruits, slightly floral and an impressively long\nfinish.&nbsp; We think it is the perfect wine\nfor summer, great with all manner of food, or just with the Sunday papers and a\ndeck chair!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Palacio del Camino Real Blanco 2017 &#8211;\n\u00a310.99<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cracking\nblend of predominantly Viura with a bit of Malvasia and Grenache Blanc, grown\nin the higher vineyards of Rioja Alta.&nbsp;\nPale yellow in the glass, with lovely fresh aromas of stonefruit and\ncitrus, framed with a touch of vanilla from a couple of months lazing around in\nthe barrel.&nbsp; A nice alternative to a\nlight white burgundy we reckon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Southern Dawn Pinot Noir 2013 &#8211; \u00a314.49<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From\nMarlborough, New Zealand, this is a wine we have had on the shelf pretty much\nsince we opened.&nbsp; I could give you all\nthe guff about the soil in the vineyards, the angle of the slope the vines are\nplanted on and the winemaker\u2019s collection of 19th century corkscrews, but none\nof that is really relevant.&nbsp;
