{"id":1124,"date":"2019-03-29T14:41:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T13:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1124"},"modified":"2019-03-29T14:41:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-29T13:41:00","slug":"the-cynic-amongst-us-is-on-holiday-so-this-is-all-probably-nonsense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parkvintners.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1124","title":{"rendered":"The cynic amongst us is on holiday, so this is all probably nonsense\u2026."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fellow Wine\nLovers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right, that\u2019s\nit, I\u2019ve had enough, I\u2019m leaving Europe, with or without you.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently,\nthere was an online consultation that attracted an unprecedented 4.6 million\nresponses last year, of which 84 per cent were in favour of a new legislation.&nbsp; This then led to a vote amongst the EU\nlawmakers, where the darling MEPs voted 410 to 192 in favour of ending it, with\n51 abstentions, (not sure where the other 98 members were, I\u2019d have thought\nthere would have been a three line whip for this), which means that, as of 2021,\nit\u2019ll no longer be with us.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep, Strasbourg\nhas stolen our summertime.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No more spring\nforward, fall backwards; no more 7 months of summer because that\u2019s what the\nclocks tell us; no more cheeky extra hour in bed in late October; and frankly\nthe alarming potential for the sun to rise in London at 3.45am and 3am in John\nO\u2019Groats over solstice.&nbsp; For me it\u2019s\npurely a nostalgic thing, I\u2019m not a farmer or a factory worker although a\nlonger evening is more beneficial to our trade than a lighter early\nmorning.&nbsp; I\u2019m sure I would get over it\nvery quickly but, as one of my peers oft states, the EU just wants to\nhomogenise everything and neutralise individuality \u2013 we kept our pints and our\nmiles, let\u2019s keep our changing clocks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2018Right, that\u2019s it, I\u2019ve had enough, I\u2019m\nleaving Europe, with or without you!\u2019<\/em>,\nthus spake my wife last night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think\nwe\u2019d had a row or anything and in fact I\u2019m not sure she was addressing me\nanyway as most of the vitriol seemed to be targeted at the Toshiba laptop in\nfront of her.&nbsp; It seems, and I\u2019m giving\nyou the edited\/sanitised highlights here, that the EU has proposed putting\nspeed limiters in all new cars from 2022.&nbsp;\nNow, my wife, being of the country, has always had a close relationship\nwith cars \u2013 if you couldn\u2019t drive you couldn\u2019t go out \u2013 so the prospect of\nBrussels meddling with her preferred form of transport certainly seemed to get\nher goat.&nbsp; No more spinning along at\n52mph on the A3, no more racing along at 73mph on the M3 \u2013 no more life in the\nfast lane for Mrs Park Vintners\u2026. And she was incensed, big brother was\nmentioned and that crushing of independent spirit, all in the name of\nhomogenisation, was once more aired.&nbsp; I\ndid mention that it wasn\u2019t until 2022; it would only be on new cars (not a\nthing we usually get involved with); that the driver will be able to override\nthe restrictor by just putting their foot down but, by this stage, the rant was\nin full sail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, with that,\nmy wife brexited \u2013 anyone going to join her?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back on planet\nwine, the eternally optimistic team at Majestic have finally let the mask slip\n\u2013 things are not as peachy at the wine warehouse as carefully spun annual\nfigures would have had us believe.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hot on the heels\nof Oddbins facing a forced departure from the high street, Majestic announced\nit was going to close a portion of its stores and rebrand as Naked, the online\nside of the business.&nbsp; \u201cA dramatic and\nunexpected change in strategy\u201d is how one analyst put it.&nbsp; The cynic amongst us might suggest a bit of\nasset stripping by selling shop freeholds and then a sale of the retail\nbusiness to Mike Ashley perhaps \u2013 in the meantime Naked remains online, as it\nwas and always has been, but \u00a370 million richer from when Majestic bought them\n4 years ago and with their database too \u2013 clever.&nbsp; However, the cynic amongst us is on holiday,\nso this is all probably nonsense\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suffice to say,\nwe don\u2019t have an online presence so you\u2019ll have to keep on popping in to visit\nus and, hopefully, we can make this chore less tedious at weekends by opening\nsome wines for you to taste?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks back\nwe mentioned new wines we had listed and old wines that had returned to the\nfold and we have been opening examples each week.&nbsp; This week it is the turn of Domaine Treloar\nand Bodegas Resalte de Pe\u00f1afiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domaine Treloar\nhas been on the books for a number of years now and we have no doubt bored you\nbefore about Jonathan the Yorkshireman and the Rachel the Kiwi Lady responsible\nfor these superstar wines down in the deep south of France?&nbsp; Have we not?&nbsp;\nOh, okay then, here goes.&nbsp; Their\npath into wine was rather unusual, after working in IT for 15 years; they were\nliving almost next door to the World Trade Center when it was destroyed in\n2001. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having\nexperienced that disaster at first hand, they decided to change direction,\nheading to Rachel\u2019s native home of New Zealand where Jonathan studied oenology\nand viticulture at Lincoln University. &nbsp;He\ngraduated top of the class, and then worked as the Assistant Winemaker at\nNeudorf Vineyards for 2 years.&nbsp; In 2006\nthey founded Domaine Treloar, where they do everything in both vineyard and\nwinery themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013 they\nwere chosen as the Coup de Coeur (Favourite) Roussillon producer by La Revue du\nVin de France, the country&#8217;s most influential wine magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>La Terre Promise 2016 (\u00a318.49)<\/strong> is a delicious white blend of Grenache\nGris (50%), Macabeu (30%) and Carignan Blanc (20%).&nbsp; A rich weighty white that\u2019ll be delicious\nwith some garlic and herb roasted chicken or Bouillabaisse if you have time, or\non its own if you don\u2019t!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we lost\nEmilio Moro from our shelves we have been kissing a lot of frogs in search of a\nnew prince &#8211; meet <strong>Lecco Crianza 2014 &#8211;\n\u00a319.29 <\/strong>\u2013 proper Ribera del Duero royalty.&nbsp;\nReading Wayne\u2019s notes, he says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Es un vino sensato, maduro y seguro de s\u00ed\nmismo.
